What do missed calls cost a small business?
Short answer: across industries roughly 4 in 10 calls to businesses are not answered by a person, and many of those callers do not leave a message. Some call a competitor straight away. Below are the public numbers, with sources, and a simple formula to estimate your own loss.

Industry rows use Invoca's categories (Healthcare, Home Services, Automotive, Consumer Services). Values are US averages; yours may be higher or lower. Restaurants, law firms and real estate have no neutral public value per enquiry, so the calculator uses an example value you should replace.
The formula
Lost bookings per month = calls per week × 4.33 × share not answered live × 58% who leave no voicemail × share of calls that become a booking.
Lost revenue per month = lost bookings × value of one booking.
Example, dental practice: 15 calls a week × 4.33 × 46% × 58% × 19.4% ≈ 3.4 lost bookings a month. At $406 per visit that is about $1,360 a month. This is an estimate, not a promise: it assumes everyone who leaves a voicemail is called back and books, and it ignores repeat visits, so it is on the cautious side in those two ways.

What helps
- Answer more calls live at busy times, or forward them to someone who can.
- Call back within the hour: response speed matters (HBR 2011).
- Give callers another way to get an answer at any hour, such as website chat that knows your services, hours and prices. In CallRail's survey 24% of people turn to online chat when a call is not answered.
- Record a voicemail greeting with your business name and a promise of when you will call back.

Sources and caveats
Most call data comes from US studies and from companies that sell call tools (Invoca, CallRail, Moneypenny, Hostie, Clio, Zocdoc, Zenoti). We say so because it matters. Government data: AHRQ Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. We dropped popular claims we could not trace to a study, such as "85% of callers who can't reach you won't call back". Frequently asked questions
What percentage of calls to small businesses go unanswered?
It depends on the industry. Invoca's 2026 benchmark of more than 70 million calls found 56% of calls to businesses are answered by a person (52% in home services, 54% in healthcare). A smaller 2016 study by 411 Locals of 85 small businesses found 62% of calls were not answered live (37.8% went to voicemail, 24.3% got no response).
Do callers leave a voicemail?
Many do not. In CallRail's 2025 survey of 1,000 US consumers, 42% said they leave a voicemail and 21% said they immediately call another business. Moneypenny's 2016 small-business report found 69% of callers who reached voicemail hung up.
How do I estimate what missed calls cost my business?
Multiply your calls per week by 4.33 (weeks per month), by the share you do not answer live, by the share who leave no voicemail (58%, from CallRail 2025), by the share of calls that would have become a booking (Invoca 2026: leads x conversion, about 14% to 24% by industry) and by the value of a booking. The result is an estimate, not a promise.
Does Fronvia answer my phone?
Fronvia answers website chat 24/7 on every plan. On the Full plan it also answers your phone after hours on a local number (available in the US, Canada and Europe) and emails you the caller's details. It does not answer calls during your opening hours.
